The BlueGreenTest® cyanobacteria test identifies the toxic content of blue-green algae in recreational waters
Blue-green algae thrive in both seas and inland waters across many regions. When blue-green algae die, the toxins they release can linger in the water for days, and these toxins are undetectable to the naked eye, making exposure a hidden risk. The Salofa BlueGreenTest® offers a quick and easy way to detect toxic water, providing peace of mind for cottage-goers, dog owners, families with children, and anyone who spends time near water.
Can you recognize toxic blue-green algae?
Blue-green algae can be identified by green particles, often forming large mats along the shores of bodies of water. Unlike other algae species, blue-green algae decomposes when disturbed. However, you cannot tell by sight or touch whether the algae in the water has produced toxins. In fact, water that appears clean can still be highly toxic.
The most common toxins from blue-green algae, microcystin and nodularin, can cause symptoms like rashes, headaches, nausea, throat and ear irritation, eye issues, and stomach problems. These risks can be avoided with the Salofa cyanobacteria test, which detects toxins in water within 15 minutes.
Two lines indicate toxicity, one means it's safe
1. Fill the sample jar with the water to be tested.
A chemical reaction will heat up the sample jar.
2. Wait 10-15 minutes. Use the pipette to draw water from the sample jar and drop it into the smaller well of the test cassette.
3. The test result is readable after 8 minutes when 1 or 2 lines appear on the test cassette
- One line at C means there is no toxicity in the water
- Two lines indicate toxicity.
More detailed instructions are provided inside the package. Salofa’s BlueGreenTest® cyanobacteria test was developed by the University of Turku and VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland and has been available to consumers since 2017.
For a safer experience, it's essential to test water for toxins before swimming, letting your child or dog enter, or using it in a sauna. Protect your health and loved ones with a quick, affordable cyanobacteria test—your best defense against harmful blue-green algae toxins.
